Accommodation

Virtually every conceivable form of accommodation is available in Austria. From low budget to deluxe, everything is possible. Hotels, hostels, B&Bs, guesthouses, motels, chalets and apartments have a high standard of service and amenities.

Area

Austria has an area of 83,871 km2.

Capital

Vienna is the capital of Austria, which is also by far the largest city in Austria. Since 1922, Vienna forms its own state. The city is located in the north-east of the country.

Climate / weather

Austria has a continental climate in the hills, the plains and valleys. Above 1500 meters, the country has a mountain climate/ alpine climate with short summers and long winters. In the west of the country it is wetter thanin the east, this separation is caused by the central ridge of the Alps. Areas on the south side of the Alps have Mediterranean features. The winter season lasts from mid-December to late March. Springtime in the Alps starts in June.

Electricity

Austria has the same voltage as the Netherlands and Belgium, you can also just use Dutch plugs.

Government

The Republic of Austria is a federal parliamentary republic with nine states. The head of state is the Federal President, the Federal Chancellor is the head of government.

Austria has 8,219,743 (2012) inhabitants.

Language

The official language of Austria is German. Especially in village areas they speak an Austrian dialect. In Vienna they speak high German. Almost everywhere in tourist areas you can do with English.

Money

Since 2002 the euro is the legal tender in Austria. Before the Austrian schilling (ATS) was the legal tender. The schilling was divided into 100 groschen. Austria has plenty of ATMs (BankOmat) everywhere. Credit cards are accepted in almost all hotels, restaurants, shops and petrol stations, one may ask for an ID.

Religion

According to a census in 2001 was 73.6% of the Austrians Catholic. In addition, 4.7% were Protestant (mostly Lutheran), 4.2% Muslim, 3.5% other religions and 12% had no religion.

Austria is a very safe country. The national emergency number is 112. The number for the police is 133 and 144 for an ambulance.

Winter sports

Austria is a great country for winter sports. Extensive skiparadises and cozy ski villages with après-ski. Austria has numerous opportunities for skiers, snowboarders, for both beginners and advanced. Austria has several snowy areas, including Gerlos and Solden.
